UM announces open house for nursing program, funding for Grainger Clinic

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo has made two announcements regarding upcoming events at the school.

The university is holding an open house on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. in Myrick Hall. Myrick Hall is a health science building and is the home of the new UM nursing program. Refreshments will be served at the open house, and guests will have the opportunity to tour the school’s nursing facilities with faculty and staff.

UM’s new nursing facilities include a simulation and skills lab, two patient simulation rooms, two observation rooms, two classrooms and a nurses’ station.

The program’s start was initiated by UM receiving approval from the Alabama Board of Nursing in May 2024. After completing renovations to UM’s health sciences building, Myrick Hall became the new home of the new nursing program which offers a pre-licensure BSN track and an RN to BSN track in the College of Health Professions.

The pre-licensure BSN track is intended for students who are not already licensed registered nurses, and will prepare students for the National Council Licensure Examination-RN after graduation. The RN BSN track is offered for students who are licensed in Alabama as a registered nurse and who have their associate’s degree in nursing.

During the nursing program, students will learn to apply classroom studies to nursing professional practice with the help of the dedicated faculty combined with small class sizes.

In addition to the announcement of the open house, UM announced that the University of Montevallo Foundation is receiving $50,000 in funding for the Grainger Community Counseling and Wellness Clinic.

A press release described the clinic as “the university’s external counseling center that provides counseling and wellness services at no cost in rural central Alabama.”

The grant, presented by T-Mobile, will be used to create accessible community parking and playground equipment at the facility. The check will be presented during UM’s Pack the SAC volleyball match against Mississippi College on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. The game will be held at the Central State Bank Arena at the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center.
