HHS volleyball hosts First Serve Banquet

HELENA – Featuring special guest speaker Chris Stewart, the voice of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Helena High School volleyball program hosted the First Serve Banquet on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Helena Sports Complex.

The goal of the First Serve Banquet was to raise money for the Helena volleyball program. In addition to ticket sales, the banquet also featured a silent auction and all proceeds went to support the team.

The day’s festivities began with the silent auction open to the public from 3-5 p.m. Attendees could place bids for a variety of items such as Crimson Tide door wreaths, squishmallows and gift baskets. The largest prizes included a paddle board and a wall hanging of the Statue of Liberty.

Afterwards, ticket holders enjoyed catered food and desserts while listening to the voice of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Chris Stewart.

Stewart’s introduction to volleyball began as a freshman at the University of Montevallo when he started doing televised play by plays, despite knowing very little about the sport. He shared that his knowledge of volleyball grew over time, as well as his respect for the players.

“I know what y’all go through,” Stewart said to the team. “I’ve seen it, and there’s a lot of work involved. And whether you’re a seventh or eighth grader just getting started, or a senior who realizes you’re approaching your last year, I know this is meaningful to be part of a team and represent your school. It’s a special opportunity.”

In his career, Stewart has gained experience broadcasting several sports. According to him, some sports such as football may gain more attention than sports like volleyball, but this does not mean that volleyball players work any less hard. In fact, Stewart shared his belief that hard work is what counts.

“The lessons you learn by showing up every day at practice—giving your best every day at practice regardless of what happens in your matches—are going to help you so much in life,” Stewart said. “You’re never going to regret giving your best and being a part of the team.”

At the end of the night, Stewart left the players with one final message.

“Go make your memories,” Stewart said. “Go have a great time. Go beat the fool out of everybody you can and enjoy every single day.”
