Although Saturday&8217;s A-Day buzz at Bryant-Denny Stadium was not over a Simeon Castille touchdown like the previous two scrimmages, Castille is leading the way among Shelby County&8217;s football alumni at the University of Alabama.
The former Briarwood Christian defender led the defense in scoring through the spring with two touchdowns &045; a 32-yard fumble recovery during the first
scrimmage on April 6 and a 36-yard interception return on April 14.
Quarterback John Parker Wilson and the White team&8217;s offense stayed away from Castille on Saturday, as Castille collected just three tackles and one assisted tackle in the game.
Despite being disapointed in the defense&8217;s performance, Castille&8217;s was excited about the attendance.
The official number was listed at a capacity of 92,138, however, media relations personnel estimated close to 100,000 present, including the fans unable to gain stadium access. Gates were closed midway through the second quarter.
&8220;It&8217;s ridiculous. I never could have imagined that there would be that many people, but it made it more fun for both teams,&8221; Castille said.
Tight end Charles Hoke, also formerly of Briarwood, was second in receiving on April 6 with three catches for 32 yards. He was one of two players that suffered shoulder injuries Saturday, according to head Coach Nick Saban.
&8220;You never want to get anybody hurt in the spring game,&8221; Saban said, when announcing the injuries of Hoke and Glen Coffee. &8220;But (the injuries are) not bad as we see it right now. I don&8217;t think it&8217;s anything serious.&8221;
Former Oak Mountain Eagles Scott Deaton and Mitch Ray also saw playing time Saturday. Ray had an assisted tackle for the White
team, while Deaton started nearly every play on the offensive line for the Crimson team.
