A 51-year-old woman was rescued from the base of Oak Mountain’s Peavine Falls May 9 by members of the Pelham Fire Department and the Alabama State Trooper Aviation Unity after slipping and severely breaking her ankle.
Pelham Fire received the call at 5:25 p.m., and the two departments conducted a long-line rescue to airlift the woman to awaiting medical personnel, who then transported her to a local hospital.
The woman, whose name was not released, did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.
Pelham Fire Chief Danny Ray said his department has trained with the Aviation Unit for this exact scenario, and the Troopers’ assistance helped immensely.
“We’ve actually trained with the Troopers for this exact scenario,” Ray said. “Typically, that type of rescue, without their assistance, takes hours. That training really paid off yesterday.”
