The job of the coroner is to legally pronounce the death of a person. To investigate the how and why the person died and to determine if the death was suspicious, unlawful or unnatural. To do this job proficiently, you have to be medical and a legal person. I am that person. I have been an emergency medical technician for 18 years. I have also been an American Board Certified Medieolegal Death Investigator for five years. There are nine of us statewide. I have worked with Dr. Stephen Pustilnik, M.D. (the previous coroner) as his chief deputy coroner for three years. I also worked with the department of forensic sciences in Birmingham assisting with autopsies
