CALERA – Two Georgia men suspected in a crime spree stretching from Georgia to Alabama were arrested Saturday after an armed robbery at a Waffle House.

Calera police responded to an armed robbery in progress at 4:14 a.m. on Saturday at the Waffle House at 5087 U.S. 31.

Edwin Charles Mitchell, 21, of Ellenwood, Ga., was apprehended after police said he attempted to flee in a vehicle. Deangelo Marquize Heard, 19, also of Ellenwood, was apprehended as he attempted to flee on foot, police said.

Officers said they recovered the gun used in the robbery.

Mitchell and Heard were charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree theft of property. They are being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds of $60,000 each.

Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley said the men are “suspected of a crime spree from Georgia to Alabama” and that “several other law enforcement agencies will be investigating the suspects for suspected crimes committed in their jurisdictions.”
