Shelby County has 24 more sexual offenders now then it did this time last year.

The increase is fueled by a growth in population, not necessarily crime, said Sgt. Mark Bishop with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s deputy’s job is to keep tabs on sex offenders who live or work in the county. As more people move to Shelby County, it’s a number that continues to rise.

“To me, that’s a good bit more,” said Bishop. “That’s 20 more people we have to track and check in on.”

There are 184 sex offenders in Shelby County, up from 160 last year.

State law requires offenders to register with their local sheriff’s office upon release from prison. After that, offenders are required to check in again every six months, or when they move.

In the meantime, the sheriff’s office works with local police departments to visit offenders at home or work. The cycle results in offenders being monitored about every three months.

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION

The sheriff’s office is also charged by state law to mail out flyers whenever an offender moves into a neighborhood.

Of the 184 sex offenders in Shelby County, 100 are subject to publication notification.

Reasons why an offender wouldn’t have to notify residents when they move into a neighborhood vary, but include:

-The offender is a minor.

-The offender was “grandfathered in,” meaning he or she lived at a residence before the notification act became law.

-The offender committed a misdemeanor, such as indecent exposure or sexual misconduct.

Bishop said his department acts swiftly when an offender is found in violation of the notification act.

“We’ve been in a pretty good situation, and we’ve been able to get them quick,” said Bishop.

Warrants are issued for missing offenders and a U.S. Marshals taskforce helps find offenders — on average, within two days.

The most common violation is offenders not telling the sheriff’s office when they move.

A violation of the sex offender notification act is a Class C felony and a conviction would carry a sentence of at least one year in prison.

BE WATCHFUL

Bishop said public involvement makes a big difference in tracking sex offenders, especially those who are non-complaint.

“I wish I could get every parent and individual to take precautions,” said Bishop.

He encouraged people to be watchful of what goes on in their community and check the sheriff’s Web site to see if any sex offenders live nearby.
