Calera showed Friday that it has a lot to replace off last year’s dominate Class 3A team as it makes the move to Class 4A.

The Eagles hosted Chilton County for a jamboree scrimmage Friday, and was unable to stop the Tigers’ pass attack.

The Tigers heavily relied on its new spread offense to ground the Calera Eagles in a 20-0 win. A big part of that passing attack was senior Cody Jones, who caught three passes for a game-high 121 yards and two touchdowns even after he dropped his first pass.

In the half that the Tigers’ varsity starters played, Chilton County outgained Calera 178-100 yards in total offense.

After winning the coin toss, CCHS drove the field and converted a couple of third downs. One was converted on a run by senior Gheryme Reed, and the other was a 24-yard pass completion from quarterback Taylor Hughes to Kendrick Woods.

James Boswell capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle. Patrick Norman added the extra point.

Calera started its first drive well by driving deep into Chilton County territory, but the Tiger defense stiffened when Darnell Spear deflected an Eagle pass in the end zone on fourth down.

The Tigers took over and added another score. On third down and long, Hughes connected with Jones in stride for a 77-yard touchdown strike, making it 14-0 at the end of the quarter.

Both defenses clamped down on each other through most of the second quarter, but as time was running out, CCHS went to the air attack to score again. Hughes connected with Jones again for a 21-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left in the period, leaving CCHS with the 20-0 win.

The Tigers’ junior varsity team played the second half last night.
