Chelsea opened its season Friday with an opportunity to face two teams and get a lot of players in the rotation at its annual jamboree.

In their first game versus Childersburg High School, the Chelsea Hornets came out on fire scoring 20 points in the first quarter. Running back Garrett Salter ripped off 21 yards on his first play from scrimmage to help lead the way. He scored on his second play with a 49-yard touchdown to give Chelsea a 7-0 lead. After a Childersburg interception, running back Zac Hillard scored on a 9-yard touchdown to put the Hornets up 14-0. From that point on, the rout was on. The Hornets would score two more touchdowns, one by Salter and another by Russ Birdsong, to increase their lead to 26-0.

Childersburg, which struggled on offense all evening, scored its only touchdown at the end of the game when the Tigers’ running back ripped off a 48-yard run to make the final score 26-7.

Chelsea continued play, mainly with it’s second string, against in-county rival Vincent. The two teams pitted each other in a defensive battle with the YellowJackets coming out on top 12-0. Neither school was able to move the football throughout most of the game, but towards the end of the first quarter the YellowJackets began moving the football with the help of running back Juwan Rogers, who had 52 all-purpose yards in the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Jackets scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Corey Deloach with 10:11 remaining in the quarter and take a 6-0 lead. The Hornets’ Will Synder intercepted the 2-point conversion.

The Hornets tried to make one last offensive stand when the Jackets fumbled the football on their on 21, but a sack of quarterback Josh Harkin and an incomplete pass ended that threat. Rogers added a touchdown with five seconds left in the game to end the scoring.
