PELHAM – In a game that saw Tee King not see the court due to illness, the Pelham Panthers still managed to cruise to a 30-point victory at home over the visiting Chilton County Tigers on Monday, Jan. 27.
Pelham won 60-30 behind a stellar defensive effort and solid performances from Janiah Harris and Taylor Hollingsworth, who both scored in double figures.
Maggy Harrelson was the lone Chilton County player to score in double figures with 10 points as the Panthers defense imposed its will early and often.
The game started with a 15-3 run by Pelham. Hollingsworth started off hot with four early points and seven different Panthers scored in the first quarter.
The Tigers did not score a field goal in the first with all of their points coming from the charity stripe.
The second quarter saw Chilton County’s offense ramp up, but Pelham also maintained its steady pace and outscored the Tigers 20-11 to head to half up 35-14.
Harris heated up for the Panthers with five in the quarter, while Camryn McMinn added four to balance Pelham’s attack. Ivy Varner and Harrelson each scored a 3-pointer in the period to help Chilton County claw back from the large deficit.
The third quarter was much closer, but the Panthers still outscored the Tigers 12-9 in the period. Hannah Bankston scored half of Pelham’s points in the third while Harrelson scored another 3-pointer for Chilton County. The Panthers headed to the fourth up 47-23.
The fourth once again went Pelham’s way as the Panthers outscored Chilton County 13-7 to close out the 60-30 victory. Harris finished strong with six points in the fourth while Harrelson continued to be the Tigers’ best offensive option with another 3-pointer in the quarter.
Up next for Pelham is another home game, this time against Marbury on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tip-off for the contest is set at 6 p.m.
