Despite four turnovers, Shelby Academy dominated Lakeside at home Friday, 43-6.
The Raiders (2-0, 1-0) scored early and often during their first game this season at Dewayne Kervin Field.
Junior Chad King ran the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a quick touchdown to set the game’s tone.
A few minutes later fullback Jason McDaniel added six more points with a 27-yard dash.
Neither team scored in the second quarter, which was filled with sloppy plays by both squads.
The Raiders fumbled the ball three times in the quarter, while Lakeside threw a pick to defensive back Keaton Woods. Before the break, the Chiefs also turned the ball over twice on downs inside Shelby’s red zone.
“Four turnovers, and we still won,” said head coach Shannon Jones. “I don’t know how.”
The Raiders’ ground game found a way to hang on to the ball in the second half, scoring three touchdowns.
Brandon Horton had two scores – a quick 3-yard dart in the third quarter and a 36-yarder to cap the night off.
King collected his second touchdown of the game on a 19-yard rush with one minute left in the third.
“The running game was good again tonight,” said Jones. “We’ve got to work on that passing though.”
Cornerback Daniel Michael scored a touchdown on special teams, recovering a high punt snap in the end zone. Guard Aaron Buff earned a safety too.
The Raiders only blemish in the second half came from a Cody Jones’ interception on Lakeview’s one-yard line.
“I thought we played well. It was getting slippery out there,” said King. “We still need to get better. If we can get our passing game going, I think we would be unstoppable.”
Lakeside’s only points of the night came when Christopher William ran a punt back 91 yards at the end of the third quarter.
Shelby travels next week to Edgewood for an area match-up.
