HELENA – As they have for much of the season, the Helena Huskies relied on the deep ball to power their offense, but this time, the shots fell left and right to fuel a dominant double-digit victory.

Helena defeated the Hueytown Golden Gophers 46-28 on Monday, Jan. 20 at Helena High School for its second win of the weekend after defeating Spain Park on Friday.

The 3-pointers started hitting in the first quarter as Anna Owens, Isabel Heintz and Mallory Rhodes each made a deep shot. However, Hueytown got off to a solid offensive start as well and earned a 10-9 lead at the end of the first.

The Huskies defense flipped a switch in the second quarter and allowed just two points in the remaining minutes before the halftime break. That paved the way for Rhodes to hit two more 3-pointers to pace Helena’s offense.

As a result, the Huskies not only took the lead but extended it to 20-12 going into the locker room.

The Golden Gophers put together a stronger offensive effort in the third, but Helena continued building off its lead thanks to its strong shooting. Lauren Smith hit two 3-pointers after going scoreless for the entire first half while Heintz hit her second of the day in the third quarter too.

Combined with baskets from Jaterrica Moody and Amari Grant, the Huskies continued building out their advantage and led 35-22 going into the fourth quarter.

From there, Grant took over for Helena, scoring eight points in the fourth quarter while Moody added in three more points during that stretch.

Hueytown couldn’t overcome the double-digit hole as the Huskies continued to outpace their visitors and sealed the 18-point victory.

Grant led Helena with 13 points and Rhodes joined her in double figures with 10 points. Heintz scored seven points, Smith earned six points and Moody finished with five points in the win.

The Huskies improved to 14-9 on the season with the victory. They will look to close out area play on a high note against rival Pelham on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. at Pelham High School.
