Cornerstone Christian School dominated Dixie on both sides of the ball Friday its clinch their first regional win, 34-0.

Junior Cory Woodall put the Chargers on the board with a 39-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

“We got a little better from last week,” said Tim Smith, head coach for the Chargers.

Smith said the team cut down on turnovers and penalties from last week to clinch the win over the Rebels.

The passing game for Cornerstone Christian also improved from last week, with Lance Benton completing three-of-four passing attempts including one completion to J.V. McKinney for the Chargers’ second touchdown.

After suffering an injury last Friday against Shelby Academy, McKinney was told that he would be out for the season. But in what Coach Smith described as “a miracle,” McKinney was told Tuesday he was fine and the injury was just a high ankle sprain.

“It didn’t bother me tonight,” McKinney said.

Cornerstone picked up its third touchdown after Benton kept the ball and ran it in from 18 yards out, putting the Chargers up by 22.

After Cornerstone forced a fumble, Brandon Johnson recovered it and ran it in for the Chargers fourth touchdown of the night.

On Dixie’s next offensive drive, the Rebel quarterback threw an interception sending McKinney on an 84-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring.

The Chargers are gearing up for next week’s game against nearby rival Coosa Valley Academy, a game that could set the tone for the rest of the season, Smith said.

“Whoever wins that (the game next Friday) is going to have the upper hand on who gets into playoffs,” Smith said.
