MONTEVALLO – The Spain Park Jaguars dominated on both ends of the floor while securing victory in a cross-county road trip to the Montevallo Bulldogs.
Spain Park defeated Montevallo 65-13 on Monday, Jan. 20 at Montevallo High School to pick up another win in non-area play.
The Jags opened up the game strong, allowing just two points on the defensive end of the floor. That helped them quickly build out a double-digit lead and take a 19-2 lead into the second quarter.
From there, Spain Park continued to dominate and pull away as Montevallo couldn’t find many answers on offense. The Jags defense gave up just two points for the second straight quarter, and also like the first quarter, the offense was good for 19 points.
As a result, Spain Park took a 38-4 lead into the halftime break.
The Bulldogs had a bit more offensive success in the third quarter as they got into double figures thanks to six points in the opening eight minutes of the half.
The Jags kept plugging away on offense though and outscored Montevallo 19-6 in the third to lead 55-10 after three quarters of play.
From there, Spain Park used its commanding lead to see out the victory. The Jags dropped 10 more points in the fourth and allowed just three points in response on their way to a 52-point win.
One of the big factors in the Spain Park victory was Brooke Bentley. She finished with 26 points off 8-for-16 shooting, including 6-for-11 from downtown, as well as five steals and three rebounds.
Trinity Daniels joined Bentley in double figures with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Tori Flournoy finished with seven points and two steals.
MC Hunter and Kamie Dawsey each had five points with Hunter earning seven rebounds and six steals and Dawsey securing six assists, three rebounds and two steals. Ava Leonard and Jordyn Corey scored four points each as Leonard added two steals and Corey had four steals.
The Jags improved to 11-14 overall while the Bulldogs slipped to 1-20.
Spain Park will look for its first area victory in its area finale against the Chelsea Hornets on Friday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Chelsea High School, and Montevallo will look to do the same on the road at Jemison on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
