ALABASTER – The city of Alabaster is now accepting applications for the Alabaster Beatification Board for those who wish to play a major role in helping keep Alabaster beautiful while assisting with several annual events.

The Alabaster Beautification Board aims to enhance the visual beauty of the city, preserve its historical value and promote environmental stewardship for the common good of all residents and businesses.

“I’m a firm believer in giving back to one’s community,” said Marie Jordan, president of the Alabaster Beautification Board. “In other words, I don’t want to enjoy all of the fruits of the community without giving. I think we all need to share and give back to the community in some fashion and volunteers are very hard to come by.”

The Alabaster Beautification Board meets every third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. in the Alabaster City Council chambers at city hall. The board is also responsible for certain articles for the “Alabaster Connection” and other media outlets as well as residential and business award selection.

“We want a board member who really wants to contribute to making us a better board and able to better serve the community,” Jordan said. “We’re looking for people who want to give their talents and expertise in allowing us to continue to grow and help the city.”

In addition to the responsibility of regular monthly meetings, the Alabaster Beautification Board takes an active role in the community by assisting with or hosting a series of events and projects each year, including the Alabaster Tour of Lights, Clean Sweep, festivals, seminars, Christmas parade and more.

“We want to continue to grow, inspire and make a difference in our community and that’s the kind of people we need to continue our success,” Jordan said.

The following is a general overview of the responsibilities of board volunteers:

  • General knowledge of landscaping: design, materials, use of native plants, low maintenance, sources, etc.
  • Knowledge of city clean-up projects, e-cycling and recycling and other projects as listed
  • Attend regularly scheduled and or called meetings/able to work at special projects/events
  • Work harmoniously with board members and the public
  • Perform responsibilities and accept assignments to projects
  • Promote projects consistent with our mission and the city’s vision
  • Suggest/present/coordinate new projects for consideration
  • Photography skills desired but not required

With the role being a volunteer position that requires responsibility and dedication, Jordan shared that she believes she receives a “great deal of satisfaction” from serving on the board knowing that she is making a difference in the Alabaster community.

“To me, It’s the core of happiness and satisfaction, knowing I’m making a difference in some way in the community and hopefully encouraging other people to do the same,” Jordan said.
