HOOVER – Fresh off an area win on the road at Helena, the Spain Park Jaguars rolled right into a non-area matchup less than 24 hours later against the Prattville Lions and emerged with a dominant win over a Class 7A side.
Spain Park defeated Prattville 67-50 on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Spain Park High School for its second win in as many days.
The Jags allowed just six points on defense in the first quarter and took advantage on the offensive end. Walker Coxhead started the game with six first-quarter points while Lee Guthrie scored multiple field goals in the opening period, giving Spain Park a 13-6 lead at the end of the first.
The Lions offense hit another gear in the second quarter, scoring 15 points across six different players. However, the Jags started finding success from deep as Harrison Stewart, Tommy Morrison and Crawford Blevins each knocked down a 3-pointer in the second.
Prattville cut the deficit to 26-21 going into the break, but Spain Park still had a two-possession lead and quickly built off it in the third quarter.
Morrison and Garrett Gorman each had six points in the third quarter, with Gorman’s coming off a pair of 3-pointers. Stewart and Sam Fox also hit 3-pointers as seven different Jags combined for 26 points in the third.
The defense held up its end of the bargain, giving up just six points in the third quarter to expand Spain Park’s lead to 52-27 ahead of the fourth quarter.
The Lions found more success on the offensive end during the fourth quarter, but the deficit from the third-quarter rally proved too great to overcome as the Jags finished off the 17-point victory.
Stewart led Spain Park with 13 points while Morrison finished with 11 points. Coxhead scored seven points, Gorman earned six points and Zach Erickson had five points. Guthrie and Josh and Jonathan Fonbah each scored four points in the victory.
