CLANTON – After dropping their area opener against Benjamin Russell by just eight points, the Calera Eagles looked for a chance to start a new win streak and get back on track in area play against the Chilton County Tigers.

Going on the road to Chilton County High School, Calera used a big third quarter to secure the 63-47 win over Chilton County on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The Eagles went with a balanced attack out of the gate as Kegan Johnson’s four points made him one of five different scorers for the team in the first quarter.

As a result, Calera took a 13-9 lead into the second quarter to get the early edge on the Tigers.

The second quarter was an even closer battle as the two teams matched each other in scoring. After hitting a 3-pointer in the first quarter, Jamarcus Adams took over in the second quarter, scoring six points to get him on the cusp of double figures for the half. Isreal Robinson also got in on the offensive action with his first four points of the game.

The Eagles used those scoring contributions to maintain a four-point lead heading into halftime with the score at 25-21.

Calera needed a big third quarter to pull away and establish itself as the favorite to win, and that’s exactly what it got.

Adams continued his strong night with seven points in the third, but after being held scoreless in the second quarter, Johnson almost couldn’t stop scoring from then on, dropping 12 points during the third quarter alone.

Devyn Goodman added on six points to get himself into double figures, and the trio combined for 25 of their team’s 27 points in the third quarter.

That allowed the Eagles to build out a double-digit lead and go up 52-36 ahead of the fourth quarter.

Calera cruised from there with a lead that Chilton County couldn’t overcome. Johnson added five more points in the fourth and Adams punctuated his night with another 3-pointer as the Eagles put the finishing touches on the 16-point victory.

Johnson led Calera with 21 points while Adams scored 19 points and Goodman made it three Eagles in double figures with 10 points. In addition, Garrett Mahone earned five points and Robinson finished with four points.

The Eagles improved to 15-10 and 1-1 in area play with the win. They will have a week off before starting the back half of area play against the Benjamin Russell Wildcats on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Calera High School.
