VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets picked up another victory ahead of the resumption of area play and did so against a local foe in the first game of the 2025 calendar year.
Vincent used a balanced attack to take down the Class 3A B.B. Comer Tigers 58-23 on Friday, Jan. 3 at Vincent Middle High School.
KK McGinnis got going early with a pair of field goals for five first-quarter points and Taniya Robertson, TK Smoot and Gracie Phillips each hit 3-pointers to power the Jackets offense early.
However, it was Vincent’s defense that allowed the hosts to establish a commanding 12-3 lead going into the second quarter.
B.B. Comer’s offense bounced back in the second quarter as it got more scorers involved to hit 15 points for the half.
It wouldn’t be enough to counter the Jackets’ diverse attack with six different players scoring at least one point in the second quarter, including 3-pointers from Kylie Newton and Brynlee White for their first points of the evening.
As a result, Vincent extended its halftime advantage to 30-15 and continued to establish itself as the favorite in the second half.
After scoring 12 points in the second quarter, the Tigers only mustered eight points in the entire second half and four points in each of the final two quarters.
That gave McGinnis the opportunity to continue her strong shooting night with six points in the third quarter before another six points in the fourth.
Four points in the third from Makayla Perkins and another Phillips 3-pointer helped Vincent extend its lead to 45-19 at the end of the third, and it only grew from there in the fourth quarter.
McGinnis continued to pace the offense in the fourth as the Jackets kept their foot on the gas and finished off the 35-point victory.
McGinnis led the scoring with 18 points. Phillips scored six points, White posted five points and Perkins finished with four points. In all, 11 different Vincent players scored at least two points.
The 11-3 Jackets will travel to Winterboro on Monday, Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. to face the Bulldogs ahead of two straight area games against Ranburne on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. and Horseshoe Bend on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. Both area games will be at Vincent Middle High School.
