CHELSEA – After losing a 51-49 heartbreaker on the road to Mountain Brook on Tuesday, Dec. 9 to snap a four-game win streak, the Chelsea Hornets got back to winning ways with a statement win.

Chelsea defeated the Hueytown Golden Gophers 67-36 on Thursday, Dec. 12 at Chelsea High School.

Kamryn Hudson took over the game’s early moments, scoring nine points and grabbing a trio of steals to put the momentum firmly in the Hornets’ favor. Haley Trotter also added four points and was active around the rim to give Chelsea 13 points for the first quarter.

That helped the Hornets outpace the Golden Gophers’ 3-point shooting and take a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams ramped up the offense in the second quarter, but Chelsea continued to remain in control. Trotter scored 12 points to add to her total while Sadie Schwallie and Caroline Brown each had five points in the quarter.

While Hueytown scored 15 points in the second to try and keep pace, the Hornets dropped 26 in response, increasing the lead to 39-23 going into the halftime locker room.

Chelsea’s defense recovered at the start of the second half, surrendering just four points over the course of the third quarter.

Trotter continued her dominant night with 10 points in the third quarter, including a 4-for-4 stretch at the free throw line early in the quarter.

Five other Hornets joined her on the scoresheet in the third to score 22 points and pull away for a 61-27 lead.

That proved to be enough for Chelsea to see out the win as the Hornets let their foot off the gas late and sealed the 31-point win.

Trotter finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals to lead the Hornets. Hudson earned 15 points and four steals, Brown posted nine points, four rebounds and three steals and Schwallie scored seven points. In addition, Sydney Carroll finished with four points and three boards.

The win over Hueytown kicks off a stretch of three games in three days. Chelsea will head to Vestavia Hills High School to play in the Maserati Classic, first against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Friday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. and then against Parker on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
