Calera officer receiving treatment for serious injuries after head-on collision

CALERA – A Calera police officer is currently undergoing treatment at UAB for serious injuries after a head-on collision occurred yesterday evening on Highway 191.

At approximately 5:23 p.m., Jemison police, fire and rescue were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Hwy 191 at the intersection of County Road 42 west. Upon arrival, police identified two vehicles involved in a head-on collision, including an SUV and a city of Calera police unit.

The Calera officer was on duty and en route to her residence in Chilton County at the time of the accident. Jemison police confirmed that the female driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Calera police officer received serious injuries and was escorted to UAB where she is currently receiving care.

“All of us here at Calera PD want to thank the Chilton County emergency medical personnel and law enforcement officers who responded last night to deliver aid,” read an official Facebook post by the Calera Police Department. “We also appreciate all of the agencies that are now conducting the accident investigation. This was a terrible accident that has affected two families and communities. Our prayers go out to both the family of our officer and the family and friends of the lady who tragically lost her life.  Please respect the privacy of both families while Jemison and Clanton police departments conduct their investigation.”

The investigation is considered ongoing by the Jemison Police Department and is being handled by the Jemison Police Traffic Homicide Unit and is assisted by the Clanton Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.

“Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to everyone involved,” Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said. “Officers from every agency in the county responded and assisted. I really appreciate that. It takes a team and everybody working together to work these type incidents as they should be worked.”
