HELENA – A few days after dropping their season opener by two points in overtime on their home floor, the Helena Huskies faced another challenge on Thursday, Nov. 21, entering the final quarter of a matchup with county foe Thompson trailing by one point.

The Huskies, however, were determined not to fall to 0-2 on the season and it showed on the defensive end of the floor in the final quarter.

Helena gave up just two points in the quarter, while the offense capitalized, using a 10-0 run to storm in front for a 40-31 lead before Thompson even scored in the quarter, leading to a 40-33 victory that evened the Huskies’ record at 1-1.

It capped off an entertaining game between the two teams that featured a back-and-forth battle throughout.

Thompson got off to a quick lead with a 4-0 run from Carson Champion out of the gate, but the back and forth began after that.

The Warriors ultimately took a five-point lead at 8-3, but four different scorers in the quarter helped Helena fight back, including six straight from Denton McDonald that put the Huskies in front 9-8.

Thompson, however, did get two late free throws from Chase Lewis in the quarter to take an 11-9 lead going to the second period.

The Warriors again were able to build a lead off of that, carrying the run all the way to 6-0 to put them in front 15-9 early in the second quarter.

A big Tyler Anderson 3-pointer for Helena quickly halted that run, while Joseph King followed with a basket to make it a one-point game once again.

The Warriors, however, continued to find big runs and took their largest lead of the game going into the half thanks to a 7-1 run making the score 22-15 in favor of Thompson at the break.

Thompson went on to lead by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, extending the run to 12-3 before Helena made a move.

Kevin Pinkard and King had six and four points, respectively, down the stretch in the quarter, while Drew Davis added four to bring Helena to within a point at 31-30 going to the final period.

The Huskies had all of a sudden gone from down 10 at 27-17 to down one, and the run carried into the second half, eventually building it up to a game-closing 23-6 between the third and fourth quarters to pick up the 40-33 victory.

Thompson got nine points from Daeshaun Morrisette, while Ethan Hudson and Aaron Gover both finished with seven.

McDonald led Helena with 11 points, while King and Pinkard were just behind with 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Huskies.
