CALERA – The Calera Eagles are back in the win column after dropping three games in a row since their season-opening win over the Class 7A Oak Mountain Eagles.

This time, they beat another county foe in the Spain Park Jaguars by a score of 58-46 on Monday, Nov. 18 at Calera High School.

Spain Park came in off multiple solid performances, crushing Center Point 64-4 on Wednesday Nov. 13 before falling by just two points to Hueytown the next day in a 48-46 road defeat.

The teams came out of the gate fairly evenly matched as Spain Park used 3-pointers from Ava Leonard, Tori Flournoy and MC Hunter to keep pace with Calera, which got 3-pointers of its own from Maddie Green and Kora Johnson in addition to four points from Destyni Grays.

That helped the Eagles take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.

From there though, Calera erupted on the offensive end, scoring 22 points in the second. Grays led the way with eight points and Johnson scored seven as both players hit double figures for the half.

Flournoy hit a pair of 3-pointers on the other end of the floor to help the Jags try and keep pace, but the Eagles won the second quarter 22-10 to go into halftime with a 34-21 lead.

Calera’s offensive pace slowed down in the third quarter which allowed Spain Park to start to chip away at the deficit. Flournoy added three points to get into double figures and 3-pointers from Lindy Easterling and Jordyn Corey to outscore the Eagles 11-7 in the third.

However, that still left Calera with a 41-32 lead going into the fourth, and the Eagles saw out the victory from there.

JaKalyn Jones and Johnson took over for Calera in the fourth quarter, combining for all 17 of their team’s points in the final eight minutes.

While Flouroy and Corey in particular tried to spur Spain Park on, the Eagles won the quarter and saw out the 12-point victory.

Johnson led Calera with 22 points, Grays had 13 points and Jones earned 12 points to make it three double-digit scorers for the Eagles. Green added six points in the win.

As for the Jags, Flournoy led the team with 17 points, Corey earned 10 points and Leonard had nine points.

Both teams will have a rapid turnaround as Calera will host Dora on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. and Spain Park will face Montevallo at home on the same date with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
