The Spain Park Jaguars are still perfect on the young 2024-25 season after claiming a pair of road victories in a three-day stretch.

Spain Park defeated the Hueytown Golden Gophers 80-75 on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Hueytown High School before traveling to Prattville on Saturday, Nov. 16 to down the Lions 54-39.

In their game against Hueytown, Tommy Morrison came out strong out of the gate with a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter for 11 points during that span.

Josh and Jonathan Fonbah helped the Jags continue to build out a lead that stood at 24-11 at the end of the first.

However, the Golden Gophers defense kicked into high gear in the second quarter and surrendered just six more points before halftime.

That allowed Hueytown to outscore Spain Park 17-6 in that stretch and slash the halftime deficit to 30-28.

Needing a big response, the Jags once again turned to the deep ball. After going scoreless in the first half, Sam Fox made a trio of 3-pointers during the third, joining Harrison Stewart and Garrett Gorman with made baskets from long range in the quarter.

In all, Spain Park scored 26 points in the third and allowed just 19 from Hueytown, extending the lead to 56-47 going into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Gophers refused to go away though and kept it as just a one possession game. Braylon Patton finished off a 32-point night for Hueytown to lead the way for the offense and keep his team within striking distance.

The Jags withstood the pressure though and found multiple baskets from both Fonbah brothers and Morrison down the stretch to seal the four-point win.

Morrison led Spain Park with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Josh scored 15 points, Jonathan had 11 and Stewart joined them in double figures with 10 points, making it four Jags players who scored at least 10 points. Fox and Gorman both had nine points.

Spain Park used that momentum to dominate Prattville in a Saturday showdown.

The Jags defense locked in from the opening whistle and allowed just one field goal in the opening quarter.

While Spain Park didn’t have the sharpest quarter on the offensive end, the defensive effort gave them a 9-2 lead at the end of the first.

The Jags continued to balance out their scoring in the second quarter but found more success, scoring 17 more points before halftime. Morrison knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to lead the six different Spain Park scorers.

The Jags outscored Prattville by six in the second to lead 26-13 at halftime.

The Lions caught fire from deep in the third, hitting four 3-pointers including three from Xavier Dunn, which were his first points of the game.

However, Stewart also scored his first points of the contest and made a big impact in doing so, scoring 11 points including a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter. It proved to be his final total for the night.

That helped Spain Park lead 41-27 at the end of three quarters of play, and the Jags cruised from there to the 15-point victory.

Stewart’s 11-point third quarter was good enough to lead the entire team in scoring. Morrison scored nine points, Fox had seven points, Andy McQueeney earned five points and Quinn Davis and Jonathan each scored four points apiece.

Spain Park will look to keep its hot streak going when it hosts Pinson Valley on Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
