BROOKWOOD – Less than a week after defeating the Brookwood Panthers for their first win of the season, the Montevallo Bulldogs repeated the feat, this time on the road.

Montevallo defeated Brookwood 58-54 in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Brookwood High School, sweeping the season series in the process.

The teams were evenly matched out of the gate as the Bulldogs spread the ball around on offense and prevented the Panthers from grabbing a significant hold on the game.

At the end of the first quarter, Montevallo and Brookwood were tied up at 11-11 with the game still hanging in the balance.

Both offenses kept that pace going in the second quarter as they looked to grab a hold of the momentum.

Dee Cutts added on to his three points from the first quarter with six second-quarter points to get on the cusp of double figures. He also helped the Bulldogs go 6-for-9 from the free throw line to keep pace with the Panthers.

Not only did Montevallo keep pace with Brookwood, but the visitors slightly outpaced the hosts and held a 23-22 lead going into the halftime break.

The game continued to be balanced on a knife’s edge in the third quarter, but this time, it was Keiston Ross who took over for the Bulldogs.

He scored six of his team’s 15 points in the third, which matched the Panthers’ offensive output and left Montevallo with a slim 38-37 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

Cutts and Buck Ross powered the Bulldogs offense in the final period as they sought to claim the win.

However, Brookwood slightly outpaced Montevallo and won the fourth quarter 13-12, leaving the teams tied at 50-50 at the end of regulation. That sent the game to overtime to decide a winner.

The Bulldogs took command in the extra period, allowing just one basket from the Panthers while taking care of business on the offensive end to secure the four-point win.

Cutts led Montevallo with 23 points and both Ross brothers got into double figures as Keiston scored 12 points and Buck had 11 points. Brannon Hudson added on five points in the win.

The Bulldogs were unable to take that momentum into their Monday, Nov. 18 showdown with Hale County as they fell to the Wildcats 77-42 on the road at Hale County High School.

However, Montevallo will have a chance to bounce back on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. when the team travels to St. Clair County to battle the Saints.
