MONTEVALLO — American Village in Montevallo hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The historical site did not charge for admission on Veteran’s Day to allow for anyone to take part in the festivities.
“American Village recognizes the importance of remembering and honoring Alabama’s and the nation’s veterans,” American Village Communications Officer Melanie Poole said.
Throughout the day the American Village had colonial army muster, where children and families joined George Washington’s army and met various patriots of the past. John Adams, Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and many other costumed historians were on site for everyone to meet and greet.
“Our interpreted staff and historians did a wonderful job,” Poole said. “It’s always a wonderful day to express our appreciation to the men and women who fought for our liberties.”
The newest addition to the American Village is the west wing of Independence Hall. Inside the building there’s an interactive exhibit in the foyer.
“There’s a wonderful theatre in the wing of independence Hall,” Poole said. “There was an original film playing that was created for the American Village.”
At 11 a.m. there was a chapel service to honor veterans with a wreath laying that followed. The wreath laying took place at the National Veterans Shrine.
The wreath was walked from the chapel to the shrine where it was laid in front of the statue. Attendees had the opportunity to place an American flag in the wreath in honor of a veteran and rang the bell.
“One of the most touching moments of the day is after the service during the wreath laying,” Poole said. “We had many young children take part in the ceremony with their parents.”
The day consisted of many activities and interactive exhibits, all free of charge.
“It was so nice to see families take advantage of the free admission and come celebrate,” Poole said.
