Republican incumbent Gary Palmer was re-elected to a sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives for Alabama’s Sixth Congressional District during the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Palmer was first elected to the position in 2014 and has served three terms since, now preparing to serve his district for a fourth term.

Palmer has won re-election over Democratic candidate Elizabeth Anderson.

As of 11:07 p.m., Palmer had earned 214,185 of 293,604 votes cast in the areas that make up the district.

The Sixth Congressional District represents all of Shelby, Bibb, Chilton and Coosa counties as well as portions of Jefferson and Blount counties.

Palmer had 72.95 percent of the vote at the time, while he had 71.31 percent of the vote in Shelby County. In the county, he earned 76,842 votes out of 107,757 ballots cast in the election with 77 percent of the county reported.

Palmer currently serves as the House Republican Policy Committee Chair, while also serving on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

He also serves on subcommittees on energy, environment and climate change, oversight and investigations and government operations and federal workforce.

Gary Palmer grew up in Hackleburg, a small town in Northwest Alabama, and now lives in Hoover. He attended the University of Alabama where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Management. He was the first person on either side of his family to attend college.

Palmer was a founding member of the board of directors of the State Policy Network, an umbrella organization for various state-based think tanks. He served on the State Policy Network board for six years, the last two as chairman.

Palmer served as President of the Alabama Policy Institute for 24 years. During his tenure, the Alabama Policy Institute became a full-spectrum public policy organization that engaged in virtually all policy issues that affected Alabamians.  It is considered the premier conservative think-tank in Alabama.

In Congress, Palmer is focused on paying down the national debt by cutting spending; regulatory reform by reducing the number and expense of federal regulations; lowering energy costs and spurring economic growth and job creation by accessing America’s vast energy resources; and replacing Obamacare with a health care plan that puts people back in charge of their health care decisions and that will truly make health care affordable and available; and protecting life in all its forms.
