MONTEVALLO – Each year the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce aims to provide a safe space for families to go trick-or-treating with their friends and neighbors during Hometown Halloween.

While it the weather was warmer this year, hundreds of local families still crowded the streets on Oct. 31. It’s a half mile stretch with almost every Main Street business involved, community groups and college students handed out candy and gifts.

Business owners got into the spirit of Halloween– wearing costumes and playing holiday tunes while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

“It’s amazing, all of our merchants that are so willing to decorate and dress up to play their part,” Adele Nelson, director of the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce said. “It’s a chance for business owners to build trust and learn about the community.”

The chamber’s goal is for people to know more about the businesses available to them in Montevallo, and for business owners to better understand the community.

This year’s Hometown Halloween ran from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and business owners, community groups and college students handed out candy and other goodies to trick or treaters from Main Street from city hall to Jack’s.

“Most people make an afternoon out of it,” Nelson said. “They’ll stop at a restaurant for dinner or go out with friends after all of the festivities.”

Montevallo hosts this event each year, with the crowds getting larger each year.

“You always want to say it’s the biggest event you’ve ever had but this one really was,” said Nelson.

During the event the chamber directed attendees to Dr. Shunnarah’s Halloween party as well as the Montevallo First Baptist Church trunk-or-treat event to continue the night of fun.
