APD confirms one dead after alleged self-defense altercation at gas station

ALABASTER – The Alabaster Police Department has confirmed that one individual succumbed to gunshot injuries after an alleged self-defense altercation took place at the Shell gas station on U.S. 31. off of Interstate 65.
The APD responded to a call for service on the 100 block of First Street South in Alabaster on the night of Saturday, Nov. 2. Officers responded at approximately 11:45 p.m. and once on scene, found two individuals with one suffering from gunshot wounds.
The APD requested the response of the Alabaster Fire Department to provide emergency medical treatment, however, the individual succumbed to their injuries. The second individual was secured and detained by law enforcement as part of the investigation.
Following the incident, detectives worked to gather available information related to the incident. According to a release by the APD, the Shelby County district attorney conducted a review of all physical evidence, witness statements and available video evidence and believes that the incident was an act of self-defense. The case will be brought before a Shelby County Grand Jury for a final determination.
“The Alabaster Police Department extends its condolences to all families affected by this unfortunate event and underscores its commitment to upholding justice,” Alabaster Chief of Police Curtis Rigney said. “We also encourage the community to stay vigilant and seek support from law enforcement in times of need.”
