The Thompson Warriors are on the rise this week in the Class 7A football media rankings while the Vincent Yellow Jackets have crashed out on the Class 2A top 10.
That leaves two Shelby County teams in the top 10 as Thompson moved up to No. 5 in 7A and the Spain Park Jaguars held on to their No. 4 spot in Class 6A as the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its Week 10 rankings on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
Despite dropping out of the top 10, Vincent continued to receive votes alongside the Helena Huskies and Briarwood Christian Lions.
Thompson moved up two spots to No. 5 after receiving 94 votes in the latest poll, just one more than No. 6 Austin. The Warriors bounced back from their third overtime loss of the season to Hoover with a 42-7 win over the Prattville Lions.
After finishing out the regular season with a 7-3 record, Thompson will have a bye week in Week 11 before hosting the Daphne Trojans in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs on Nov. 8 at Warrior Stadium.
Spain Park held steady at No. 4 in Class 6A while receiving 129 votes from the media. The Jags are now 9-0 on the season thanks to their latest win over Chilton County, a 37-6 performance on the road that wrapped up a perfect run through region play.
Now, Spain Park has its eyes set on its first 10-0 regular season in school history as the team travels to take on the Gardendale Rockets on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. The Jags will then host a first-round game on Nov. 8 at Jaguar Stadium against either Theodore, McGill-Toolen or Gulf Shores.
Vincent fell from the No. 8 spot in Class 2A to outside the top 10, making this the first week this season that the Jackets have not been ranked by the ASWA. Vincent still received seven votes from the media, the 13th most of any team in Class 2A.
The Jackets fell to 7-2 with a 32-24 loss to Greene County to finish out region play. Vincent is still set to host a first-round game on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. as the No. 2 seed out of Class 2A, Region 5 against either North Sand Mountain, Sand Rock or Cedar Bluff.
The Yellow Jackets will finish out the regular season at home against Class 5A Montevallo on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in a renewal of the historic rivalry.
The Helena Huskies received votes in the Class 6A poll for the second-straight week. This week, Helena earned five votes from the media after defeating Calera 49-21 to win their fourth-straight game and end the regular season with a 6-3 record.
The Huskies will host either Spanish Fort or St. Paul’s in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
Briarwood received one vote in the Class 5A rankings. Since dropping out of the top 10 after an 0-5 start, the Lions have won four straight games thanks to their latest victory, a 49-16 win over Hayden to finish Class 5A, Region 5 play.
Now, Briarwood will look to finish out the regular season with a five-game win streak when it hosts the McAdory Yellow Jackets on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Lions Pride Stadium.
