MONTGOMERY – Three of the county’s brightest senior stars will suit up for the state of Alabama as it takes on the best players from Mississippi in one of the biggest annual showcases.
Thompson’s Anquon Fegans and Jared Smith and Helena’s Torrey Ward were announced as selections for the Alabama All-Star team by the AHSADCA Selection Committee on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The trio will take the field for the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic in Mobile at Hancock Whitney Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 14 at noon.
Fegans has dominated from the safety position for the Warriors once again, ranking among the top interception leaders while exceling both in pass coverage and in his new-found role as a receiver for Trent Seaborn and the Thompson offense.
Fegans’ selection for the Alabama-Mississippi game is just the latest of a full career of accolades.
He was a finalist for both 7A Back of the Year and Shelby County Player of the Year in 2023 and has received First Team honors for the All-State, All-County and MaxPreps All-American teams in each of the past two seasons.
Smith has been a key part of the Warriors’ pass rush in his first season with the team, earning crucial sacks and getting after the running back and quarterback frequently throughout the 2024 season.
Both Fegans and Smith are committed to play football at Auburn next season, joining a class that is ranked No. 5 in the nation by 247Sports.
The site ranks Smith as a five-star prospect, the No. 2 edge rusher in the class and the 25th-highest ranked prospect in the country. Fegans is considered a four-star safety by 247Sports and is the fourth-highest rated recruit in the state, sixth-highest safety in the class and 79th overall prospect in the country.
Ward has been the biggest target for Helena quarterback Nate Ferguson this season. Entering his team’s Week 10 showdown with Calera, he has 347 receiving yards and five touchdowns off 23 receptions in eight starts according to MaxPreps.
Ward is uncommitted and unranked by national recruiting outlets but will have a chance to raise his stock down the stretch of the season and in the Alabama-Mississippi game.
