The Calera Police Department confirmed that the accident took place on Highway 31 near Whipporwill and involved the suspect entering an oncoming lane. According to court documents, the accident took place on or about 8:31 p.m.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident and at least two were injured. Moreno allegedly left the scene of the accident after it occurred. Investigation into the accident is still considered ongoing by law enforcement.

Moreno was booked into the Shelby County Jail on a $56,000 total bond on Sunday, Oct. 13 before he posted bond on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Calera Chief of Police David Hyche expressed his gratitude over social media to the various enforcement groups that helped make the investigation possible.

“I want to thank the Calera patrol shift, and detectives, the Shelby County Traffic Homicide Task Force, Pelham, Alabama Police Department and the Alabaster Police Department for conducting an extensive and thorough investigation,” Hyche said.

Hyche also thanked the Calera Fire Department for providing care to the individuals that were injured during the accident.

“This was a terrible accident that has affected several families but it could have been much worse,” Hyche said. “Seatbelts absolutely save lives. We deal with far too many DUIs and preventable accidents which are amplified by our overcrowded roads and highways. Please make the decision to never drink and drive and take to heart the fact that you will be held accountable and charged with everything we can prove if you do.”
