Spain Park caps regular season with dominant sweep of Springville

HOOVER – In their final home match of the 2024 season, the Spain Park Jaguars gave their seniors one last happy memory on their home court thanks to a commanding victory in straight sets.

Spain Park swept the Springville Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Spain Park High School to finish out their regular season slate on a positive note.

Those seniors led the way for the Jags offense. Alexa Benda finished with 14 kills and Grayson Hyde earned 10 kills, while Reagan Gilbert had a dominant night from the service line with six aces to go with four digs and a block.

The Jags got off to a dominant start to the match and used a big lead to go on and win the opening set.

Spain Park took the first set 25-10, and that set the tone for the rest of the match to follow.

After claiming the first set by 15 points, the Jags repeated the feat to double their lead in the match, winning the second set by an identical 25-10 score.

With two set wins in their back pocket, Spain Park continued to lead the way in the matchup on their home floor and cruised to another win.

The Jags earned their biggest win of the match in the third set thanks to a 25-8 scoreline, sealing the 3-0 sweep to cap off the regular season with a victory.

Cailyn Kyes secured 28 assists to help power the Spain Park attack. Bea Wiggins earned six kills and three aces, Hollyn Oliver had five kills and Ja’Niyah Mosley claimed four kills.

As for the defense, Wiggins led the team with eight digs followed by Camden Kyes with six and her sister Cailyn with five. Benda earned three total blocks while Cailyn Kyes, Hyde and Mosley each contributed to two blocks apiece.

Spain Park finished the regular season with a 24-14 record. The Jags will now play the Chelsea Hornets in the Class 6A, Area 8 semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at Pelham High School with the winner advancing to super regionals.
