NORTH SHELBY – Thursday night, Oct. 10 was all about Mia Wilson, the lone senior on the Briarwood Christian Lions, but her senior night became a little bit more special when she reached a key milestone for any setter.

Wilson surpassed 1,000 assists in Briarwood’s 3-0 win over Indian Springs at Briarwood Christian School, helping the Lions cap off their home slate in dominant fashion.

She finished the night with 30 assists along with four kills from the setter spot and three digs.

The Lions started the match off well as they got the upper hand on their local foes from just down Cahaba Valley Road and used that lead to take the opening set.

Briarwood’s 25-16 first-set win put the team up 1-0 in the match and set the table for success the rest of the way.

The Lions used that first set win to power a massive run in the second set and cruised to a dominant victory. Briarwood eventually won the set 25-8 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

From there, the Lions saw out the victory with another solid showing in the third set as they held off Indian Springs to secure the win.

Briarwood took the third set 25-17 to seal the sweep in its final five-set match of the regular season and give Wilson a win on her senior night.

Freshman Leighton Hendley made the most of Wilson’s passes by securing 13 kills in addition to two aces and four digs. Sophomore Julie Roberts earned six aces from the service line as well as eight kills and three digs.

Briarwood will hit the road to Gulf Shores to compete in ShrimpFest on Oct. 11 and 12 before the area tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Sylacauga High School. The No. 2-seeded Lions will face the No. 3 Shelby County Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. with a super regionals berth at stake.

Indian Springs will host its own area tournament on Thursday, Oct. 17. The team will look to secure the Class 4A, Area 9 championship by facing Fairfield at 4 p.m. before the championship game at 7 p.m.

Springs won the area title in Class 3A last year and will look to win again in their first year in Class 4A.
