ALABASTER – Children enjoyed jumping in a bouncy castle and meeting library mascot Bernie the great horned owl during the third annual Piney Woods Festival at the Albert L. Scott Library.

This year’s installment of the festival took place on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and featured crafts, vendors and a book sale.

“It went well,” Library Director Kim Roberts said. “We had a smaller group of people and a smaller group of vendors, but everybody seemed to have a good time on a good Saturday morning.”

The Piney Woods Festival featured a variety of carnival games and activities for kids to enjoy such as ring toss and cornhole. Additionally, Carmeuse Longview sponsored a kids zone area which offered an inflatable castle for kids to jump in.

The Albert L. Scott Library’s mascot, Bernie the great horned owl, stopped by during the event to take photographs.

“Everybody wanted to come up and give him a hug and get a picture,” Roberts said. “Of course, he had treats with him, so everybody wanted to come see what he was about. So, he was definitely a hit.”

In addition to activities for children, various vendors and food trucks were present for families to stop at as well as the library’s book sale which took place in the library’s Nan Abbott Room.

The following vendors and organizations attended the Piney Woods Festival:

  • Shea Rene Products & Gourmet Treats
  • Sassy and Ruth’s Handmade Creations
  • Sew Cute Gifts by Jen
  • Central Alabama Honey & Apiary, LLC
  • CSE Creative Designs
  • Scented X Shanell
  • Trinkety Treasures
  • Finesse Travel and Adventures LLC
  • Peach Planet Designs LLC
  • Moon Sprinkles Cookie Shoppe
  • Kathleen Turnipseed

A raffle was also held at the event for a stained glass picture that features a personalized quote which was donated by a member of the Friends of the Albert L. Scott Library.

Funds raised from the event went into the Albert L. Scott Library’s building fun which will go toward Alabaster’s new library which will begin construction in the future. The Friends of the Albert L. Scott Library are gathering funds to assist with amenities within the upcoming library while the city focusing on constructing the facility.

Those who wish to help with the Friends of the Albert L. Scott Library in raising funds may make a donation at the library’s front desk or online on the city’s website.

Roberts expressed her gratitude for those who helped make the Piney Woods Festival possible this year.

“Just a huge thank you to everybody who worked very hard and our Friends (of the Albert L. Scott Library) group who put in countless extra hours to make this happen because this isn’t something that we just pull off in a day, it is something we’ll work months for,” Roberts said. “Everybody worked very hard and thank you for that. Thank you for our vendors that came out. So, It was a really good day.”
