ALABASTER – Residents can look forward to an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a good cause during the inaugural One Mile Fun Walk and Run for breast cancer research.
The first ever edition of the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Alabaster’s Patriots Park which is located at 600 Industrial Road, Alabaster, AL 35007. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the one mile exercise set for 3 p.m.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Charlotte Dawson, who put together the event. “I’m feeling better and while I am, and as long as I am, I want to do what I can to help or to give back.”
After getting her regularly scheduled mammogram in June 2023, Dawson received a clear report and continued with life as normal until last October when a swollen lymph node was bothering her. After trying anti-inflammatory treatment, the issue was not going away and it was discovered that Dawson had stage three triple negative breast cancer.
Now, after a double mastectomy, the removal of 14 lymph nodes and chemo treatment, Dawson said she’s finally “beginning to feel like a human being again.”
After all of the surgery and treatment, Dawson has received a clean report for the past six months and shared that she is ready to give back and to help spread awareness.
“I said, ‘If I can do anything that would keep anybody from going through what I’ve been through the last 11 months of my life, I would do whatever I can,” Dawson said.
Attendees are encouraged to wear pink during the One Mile Fun Walk and Run which will take two laps to complete. Registration for the event will be $10 per adult with children ages 10 and under allowed to participate for free.
All proceeds from the event will go straight toward benefitting the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.
