DORA – For the second week in a row, the Briarwood Christian Lions throttled an undefeated team. And also for the second consecutive week, Luke Reynolds provided the offensive spark and the Lions defense proved stout all night long.

The Lions cruised to a 31-6 victory over the previously undefeated Corner Yellow Jackets on Oct. 4 at Corner High School.

After carrying the way for his team’s inaugural victory of the 2024 campaign against the Leeds Greenwave in Week 6, Reynolds got right to work and made an immediate impact.

Briarwood raced out to a big lead early as Reynolds exploded for a 53-yard TD run to put the Lions up 7-0 with 8:31 left in the first.

Then, Briarwood quickly got the ball back, but this time, they struck through the air. Quarterback Charles Dedmon connected with Eli Thompson on a 24-yard TD pass with 4:11 left in the first, and the 14-0 lead carried until the end of the quarter.

Corner couldn’t generate much offense in the second quarter, but the Lions didn’t capitalize in response.  Briarwood kicker Garrett Heineman booted a 43-yard field goal with 6:25 left in the half to give the Lions a 17-0 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Briarwood dealt with penalties on the offense but held strong on defense, keeping the Jackets out of the end zone despite staying on the field for long periods of time.

Corner finally got a balanced drive going late and scored with just 16 seconds left in the third to make it 17-6 after missing the PAT.

The Jackets’ momentum would be short lived as Reynolds erupted again in the fourth quarter.

First, Reynolds got outside for a 65-yard TD run and the Lions were in control again, 24-6, with 11:02 left in the game.

Then, Parrish Prickett intercepted a Corner pass, and that put the Lions in business again.

With Reynolds back on the field, he capped off another drive by finding the end zone. Reynolds scored again from 13 yards out to seal the 31-6 win for the Lions, their second straight win after five straight losses to open the season.

Luke Reynolds had another monster night with 11 carries for 177 yards and three touchdowns.  Brayden Robertson also had several key runs, ending the game with nine carries for 77 yards.  Briarwood rushed for 296 yards in the game, and their defense held Corner to 208 yards of total offense.

The Lions moved to 2-5 with the win and 1-3 in Class 5A, Region 3 play. They now have two region games remaining with the first coming against the John Carroll Catholic Cavaliers on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at Briarwood Christian School.
