After last week’s minor shakeup, non-region week brought just one change to the five teams from Shelby County receiving votes from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
In the Week 6 media rankings released on Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Thompson Warriors dropped one spot, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets maintained their top 10 spots and the Chelsea Hornets and Shelby County Wildcats continued to receive votes.
The Thompson Warriors fell to No. 4 in Class 7A as they received 107 votes in the latest poll. Carver-Montgomery leapfrogged Thompson to the No. 3 spot as the Wolverines stayed undefeated while the Warriors earned their second overtime loss of the season.
Thompson’s loss to Class 6A No. 2 Clay-Chalkville dropped the Warriors to 4-2 on the season. The team will hope to bounce back in a crucial region battle on the road on Oct. 4 at No. 5 Hewitt-Trussville, which sits just two votes behind Thompson.
Spain Park held on to its No. 3 spot in Class 6A and received 136 votes, just one more than No. 4 Parker. The Jags remained undefeated and improved to 5-0 with a 34-24 win over previous Class 7A No. 10 James Clemens, which dropped out of top 10 this week.
Now, Spain Park will resume region play on the road as the team takes on the Pelham Panthers on Oct. 4 in a county battle.
Vincent stayed at No. 6 in Class 2A while receiving 89 votes. The Jackets are now 5-0 after a 31-0 victory over rival Childersburg of Class 3A, keeping them perfect on the season.
The win sets up a top-six undefeated showdown with No. 4 Tuscaloosa Academy, which also sits at 5-0, at home on Oct. 4 with first place in Class 2A, Region 5 on the line.
Just like last week, two additional teams received votes but didn’t get not enough points to crack the top 10 of their respective classifications.
Chelsea is the highest unranked vote-getter in Class 6A for the second straight week. However, the gap between the Hornets and the No. 10 spot got smaller as they earned one more vote than last week with 13 votes and Homewood fell to No. 10 with 20 votes after losing to Mountain Brook.
Now 5-0 after a 49-12 road win over the Paul W. Bryant Stampede, Chelsea will look to keep its perfect season going against Chilton County at home on Oct. 4.
Shelby County received three votes in the Class 5A rankings, which is down from the seven the team received in Week 5 to put it as the first team outside of the top 10. The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season in a 28-20 non-region battle against St. Clair County.
After dropping to 5-1, Shelby County will now set its sights on Demopolis with the two teams scheduled to battle for first place in Class 5A, Region 3 on Oct. 4 at Papa McCombs Stadium in Columbiana.
As for the rest of the state, no changes occurred at the top despite multiple shakeups below due to non-region upsets.
