The Chelsea Fire Department will host an open house Oct. 5 to spread the word about fire prevention.

The open house will be from noon-4 p.m. and will be held at both Chelsea fire stations, located on Highway 69 and on Chesser Drive.

“The purpose of this is to provide fire prevention materials to adults and their children,” said Chelsea Fire Lt. Don Williamson. “October is Fire Prevention Month, and we’re having an open house to give an opportunity for adults to come in and ask questions.”

Williamson said the fire department is launching a citywide campaign to prevent home fires. The four most common causes of home fires are smoking, cooking, electrical mishaps and heating problems.

At the open house, the department will offer fire truck tours, station tours, and pamphlets on fire safety. Firefighters will also be on hand to answer questions.

Williamson said he hopes for a good turnout, especially since the fire department has invited 2,000 school children as well as area families.

The open house will likely become a yearly event, especially since the community and area businesses have been supportive, Williamson said.

Fire Chief Wayne Shirley said the event should be beneficial for Chelsea.

“We just want to invite all the community members to talk to us,” he said.
