LINEVILLE – Another week brought another statement win for the Briarwood Christian Lions in area play as they continued to roll through Class 5A, Area 8.

Briarwood continued its flawless run in area play as it beat the Central-Clay County Volunteers 3-0 on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for its fourth straight sweep against an area opponent.

The Lions have now gone 12 straight sets without dropping one to one of its three area foes, and they also clinched a sweep of the regular season series against the Volunteers.

Briarwood started out the match in dominant fashion as it built up a double-digit lead and saw it out from there to seal the win in the opening set.

The Lions won the first set 25-9, a dominant victory that set the tone for the rest of the match.

The second set was much like the first as Briarwood used another large lead to control the set and eventually take another win.

Just like the first set, the visiting Lions won the second set by a score of 25-9, putting them up 2-0 in the match and just one set win away from another area win.

Central-Clay got back into the match a little more in the third set and made it the most competitive of the three sets.

However, the Lions still remained in control and took the third set by nine points. Their 25-16 win sealed the sweep and took them to 4-0 in Class 5A, Area 8 play with two matches remaining against area opponents in the regular season.

Julie Roberts and Leighton Hendley tied for the kill lead with 10 kills each. Roberts also added three aces and two blocks, and Hendley tacked on four digs. Setter Mia Wilson earned 26 assists along with four aces and five digs, and Sara Tripp had six digs and an ace.

Briarwood will travel to Chelsea to face the Hornets and Calera Eagles in an all-county tri-match on Thursday, Sept. 26.
