ALABASTER – An old tradition is set to return with a new look when the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek hosts the Mr. and Mrs. Buck Creek pageant later this month.

Years ago, the Briarcliff Nursing Home in Alabaster would host the annual Mr. and Mrs. Briarcliff pageant at the facility where the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek is now located. Now, the new administration at the healthcare center are bringing that tradition back with a new name.

“One of the things that the residents wanted to bring back was (this pageant),” said Stephen Beane, activities director for the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek. “We were eager to make it happen.”

The free pageant will take place on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at 850 Ninth Street NW in Alabaster. After the contestants display their talents in a competition to win the coveted titles, Miss Alabama’s Teen Ali Mims will crown the winners of the pageant.

The contestants of the pageant have already been selected from the residents at the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek and the winners will be determined from a panel of judges. Planned judges for the pageant include, Assistant Vice President Branch Manager of Bryant Bank in Hoover Ashley Myers, Dr. Tara Griffin from We SAGE Health and Wellness, Alabaster Mayor Scott Brakefield and others from the local community.

The winner will be picked through various categories based on the selection process of the Alabama Nursing Home Association. Aspects of the judging include personality and physical appearance in relation to age, expressive, attitude, communication, ability to speak and communicate clearly, poise and composure on stage, quality of interview answers, attitude towards life and more.

While the facility has been around in Alabaster since 1972, the building of the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek has seen a number of renovations and is currently managed by the company Diversicare.

“It’s very different facility than how it was when I grew up,” Beane said. “(There is) beautiful landscaping now. (It’s) more beautiful than it’s ever been. The residents seem to be very happy.”
