HARPERSVILLE – The Harpersville Police Department lost one of its narcotic-detection dogs when a car struck him on July 4.
The dog, Hunter, was handled and cared for by Harpersville Police Officer Michael Moore. Hunter escaped from his enclosure at the home of his handler and ran onto U.S. 280. He was then accidentally struck by a vehicle and died at the scene, a press release from Harpersville Police Chief David Latimer stated.
“Hunter worked for Harpersville Police Department for several years as a narcotics detection K9 and was instrumental in making numerous drug cases for Harpersville Police, the Shelby County Drug task force and other agencies,” the release stated. “Hunter also played a major role in Harpersville’s community outreach efforts, especially with school children.”
