ALABASTER – The Alabaster City Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of materials to further enhance its math curriculum during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 10.

During the BOE meeting, the Alabaster City Schools BOE approved the purchase of Envision Math Materials, “Do the Math” Intervention Materials and Aimsweb Plus Math-Reading Diagnostic for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

“We have looked at a variety of different methods to improve mathematics instruction,” ACS Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers said. “We’re ahead of the game, and we’re pushing things out a lot sooner. I appreciate (the board) in being so supportive of us getting ahead of things.”

During the meeting, Vickers also shared with the board the success the school system has found with its summer camp programs.

The literacy and math summer camp program is currently in progress and has benefitted 85 students at Creek View Elementary School, 89 at Meadow View Elementary School, 51 at Thompson Intermediate School and 65 at Thompson Middle School—which is the latest ACS school to begin a summer camp.

After the meeting, BOE Vice President Derek Henderson expressed his gratitude to the board and central office for their work on the school system’s math and literacy education.

“Thank you for everybody stepping off and getting ahead on math and numeracy and literacy,” Henderson said. “It makes us look very good across the state and across the district because a lot of people are in panic mode about what they are going to do (and) how they are going to get the kids to the training to learn. And I appreciate our central office staff and everybody that is involved in giving our kids the opportunity to be ahead of the game.”
