MILLBROOK – The Chelsea Hornets capped off a stretch of spring football practices by making the trip down Interstate 65 to Millbrook to face the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs on Thursday, May 16 for a spring game.

While neither team kept score during the controlled scrimmage, the game still provided lots of takeaways and notable performances as Chelsea prepares to move back down to Class 6A.

Projected starting quarterback Miller Bauman had a big day with his arm and legs, going 11-for-21 passing for 167 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Ty Handley and CJ Durbin helped out Bauman in the passing game with Handley catching two passes for 77 yards and a touchdown and Durbin earning three receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Chase Stracener took the ball out of the backfield for the Hornets, and he ended the game with eight rushes for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Over on defense, Ethan Prickett had six tackles and an interception and John Leith picked up five tackles and an interception.

Chelsea coach Todd Cassity liked what he saw in the scrimmage, especially from a physicality standpoint.

“I thought our guys played really well,” Cassity said. “We saw a bunch of positives to build off of and some mistakes that need to be corrected. Stanhope was a physical football team and it was very good to see our guys match that physicality.”

The Hornets will open the regular season on Aug. 23 against reigning Class 3A state champion Mobile Christian.
