MILLBROOK – One of the most successful boys soccer regular seasons in Chelsea High School history is now finished, but not before setting another milestone.
Chelsea coach Lee Miller reached 250 wins on his coaching career in the Hornets’ 8-0 victory over the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs on Tuesday, April 23 at 17 Springs Complex.
The Hornets established a commanding lead with Max Wever’s natural hat trick in the first half before pulling away with five more goals.
Chelsea wasted little time pressing the attack as Kaleb Bass hit the crossbar in the opening minutes. Shortly after, Javier Rivera-Miranda crossed the ball to Wever for the opening goal to put the Hornets up 1-0.
Bass then went to work on the wing and sent a pass to Wever for another tap-in goal to double up the lead.
Just five minutes later, Bass and Wever connected again for Wever’s third goal of the half to secure his hat trick and take the lead to 3-0.
Chelsea wasn’t satisfied with those goals as Luke Miller tried to make the lead four on two separate occasions in the first half, but one of his shots went off the crossbar and the other was saved.
However, the saved shot rebounded back into the field and Shon McKinney earned the tap-in goal for the 4-0 lead.
Rivera-Miranda polished off the half with the Hornets’ fifth goal as he converted a pass from Daniel Teixeira to bury the shot for a goal and put Chelsea up 5-0 at halftime.
Not long into the second half, Cooper Baumbaugh made it back-to-back nights with a goal after he scored to increase the lead to six.
Five minutes later, Campbell Jenkins found Landon McLevaine on the other end of a pass for the Hornets seventh goal of the match.
After dishing out the assist to McLevaine’s goal, Jenkins didn’t need one to finish off his goal as he scored Chelsea’s last goal to polish off the 8-0 victory.
The historic win for Miller gave the Hornets a 19-3-1 record to finish the regular season. Chelsea’s 19 wins are the program’s most since 2007 and its three losses are a new program record for least losses in a season as it enters the playoffs as the No. 2 team in Class 7A.
The Hornets will face No. 7 Vestavia Hills in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs on Monday, April 29 at 7 p.m. on the road at Vestavia Hills High School.
