COLUMBIANA – A grassroots support campaign is currently underway in Columbiana in honor of the memory of Mike Gannon, a local resident who passed away this past year.
Throughout the month of January, there is an ongoing effort to collect gas and fast food gift cards as well as other donations that will all go toward patients currently seeking treatment at the cancer center at Grandview Medical Center.
“We have been amazed and in awe of the outpouring of love and support since Mike’s passing,” read a a statement released by Tin Top BBQ and Gannon’s family. “Many have reached out to our family asking if we have needs or if there was some way to honor him. To be honest, Mike would love nothing more than to bless the people receiving treatment at the cancer center he frequented.”
Mike Gannon, a life-long resident of Shelby County who was well known in the community for his generous spirit, great conversation and entrepreneurship died on Sept. 28 at the age of 55. While known for his work in auto body repair, many in Columbiana knew him most recently for his successful flagship business, Tin Top BBQ.
“He knew, and always acknowledged, how fortunate he was to have the resources to make sure this grueling chemo and radiation schedule filled with endless copays and visits, was not a burden,” read the statement. “However, in our many visits we saw first-hand the burden (that) treatment puts on many people and our family agrees, the best way to honor him is to give back.”
The donation effort is being carried out during what would have been the month of Gannon’s 66th birthday.
“I can’t think of a better way to honor him,” said Sheila Gray, a community member on social media. “Being the spouse of a survivor, I know the degree of difficulty and uncertainty that accompanies this awful disease. I can’t wait to contribute in honor of (Gannon’s) birthday.”
Card and other donations can be dropped off at Tin Top, Tin Top 2, the local Oyster House and the Provincial Pub throughout the entire month. Those who are unable to make a donation in person are also welcomed to contribute in the effort by utilizing venmo. Any money collected will be used to purchase gift cards on the behalf of the donator.
“We can’t thank this community and the amazing people who have loved us beyond what our family could ever imagine, enough,” the statement said. “Your love and support mean the world to us and get us through even the hardest days. Thank you.”
