HARPERSVILLE – More than 300 visitors flocked to Old Baker Farm on Saturday, Dec. 2, for an evening of family-oriented festivities to celebrate the Christmas season.
The farm’s annual “Christmas on the Farm” event featured a tree lighting ceremony, live nativity, hayride, Santa and Mrs. Claus, food trucks, fire pits for s’mores, and arts and crafts for children.
“It was beautiful,” said Pam Baker, who operates Old Baker Farm with her husband, Jerry Baker. “We just had a lot of fun activities for the families that came. I think everybody loved it.”
Baker said even though attendance was lower this year because of the SEC Championship Game also taking place Dec. 2, the event was still a success. Aside from some misting rain at the start of the event, the weather did not create issues for the farm’s festivities.
Christmas carolers dressed in 1800s-period costumes walked the grounds and sang carols, and Vincent Elementary School’s first-grade choir sang during the tree lighting.
The farm’s choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm has closed for the season in an effort to protect the future tree crop.
“If we don’t have enough trees, it diminishes the cash flow for the farm,” Baker said. “That would be devastating for us because we depend on the Christmas tree farm for cash flow. We sold a lot of trees the day after Thanksgiving. I don’t think we’ve sold quite that many trees in one day.”
Baker said the trees can take anywhere from six to seven years to grow before they are ready to be cut, and added that the farm will be planting new Christmas tree seedlings, including Carolina Sapphire, Leyland Cypress and Virginia Pine trees, in preparation for the future.
The farm also brings in freshly cut Fraser Fir trees from a farm in North Carolina.
Old Baker Farm’s Christmas tree farm will reopen on the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2024.
“We are so grateful to everyone who comes and supports our business,” Baker said. “We love everyone.”
