ALABASTER – The Thompson girls basketball team used a 15-3 first quarter to create early separation in a county matchup with Spain Park on Tuesday, Dec. 5, to pull away for a 46-22 victory on their home floor.
The Warriors scored in double figures in three of the four quarters, while their defense limited the visiting Jaguars to single digits in each period of the game.
Thompson also used nine different scorers in the game to pick up the county victory, which started in the first frame.
The Warriors used their most dominant quarter of the night in the opening period to kickstart an impressive game. Thompson got points from five different players to reach 15 points, including five from Sydney Coney and three each from Jayla Forbes and Maliyah Green.
Meanwhile, the defense started just as strong by limiting Spain Park to a game-low three points on one field goal and one free throw to give the Warriors a 15-3 advantage through one quarter of action.
That set the tone for a strong night defensively for the Warriors, who only scored eight points in the second quarter but were able to extend the lead because of the effort on the other end.
In the second quarter, Thompson got four points from Kay Kay Fenderson to lead the way, but the defense limited Spain Park to five points, which gave the Warriors a 23-8 lead going into the halftime break.
Out of the break, the Warriors found their balance again with five players scoring for the second time in the game.
That helped lead to 13 points on the offensive end, while the defense kept their hounding presence up, limiting the Jaguars to seven points.
With that, Thompson carried a 36-15 lead into the final quarter, which was more than enough cushion for their defense.
The Warriors added 10 more points in the final period, while they held Spain Park to seven points for the second quarter.
Thompson was led by 10 points from Coney in the victory, while Forbes added eight points. The Warriors also got six each from Morgan Adolphus and Fenderson.
Spain Park was led by eight points from Trinity Daniels, while Ava Leonard added seven.
