Calling all ’84 Wildcats

A special reunion for the 1984 Shelby County High School football team will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. The team will also be honored in a pre-game introduction to fans before kickoff of Shelby County’s first-round playoff game against Chilton County, which is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
Members of the 1984 team and their families are encouraged to attend to help celebrate their 10-0 regular season.
“It’s very exciting. This will be the first time we’ve all been back together as a team,” said Ken Jones, quarterback of the ’84 Wildcats. “There’s a lot of reminiscing going on (this year) and a lot of remembering that team. It was a fun year.”
The 1984 Wildcats football team was the last team to post an undefeated regular season until Shelby County did so this year with a 24-0 win over Jemison Oct. 31. Jones also had to lead his Wildcats past Jemison for the team’s 10th win ’84. That’s just one similarity he sees between the two programs.
While Jones said he does not know a lot of the players on this year’s team, he knows how close this team is, as he’s observed many grow up together in the community like he did with his teammates, playing baseball and football together since the fifth grade. He also said he sees similarities between current head coach Ryan Herring and 1984 head coach Ricky Seale.
“He’s (Herring) very good for the program and kids and obviously good at winning too,” Jones said.
The 1984 team went 12-1, losing a close game to Cherokee County in the quarterfinals.
In addition to the reunion, SCHS fans will host a bonfire for this year’s team, fans and community Thursday at 6:30 p.m. behind the high school softball field.
