Former Briarwood defensive back Andy Davis was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Davis had two key interceptions and his Samford team with seven tackles in Saturday’s 27-17 win at Georgia Southern.
Both of Davis’ interceptions came in the fourth quarter, with the first setting up Samford’s final touchdown of the game. His second interception came on Georgia Southern’s final drive of the game to seal the win.
Samford had two other players receive weekly honors, as Dustin Taliaferro was named Freshman of the Week and Bob Hooper was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Taliaferro completed 14-of-17 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He completed touchdown passes from 73 and 43 yards out, both in the second quarter to erase an early 10-point deficit.
Taliaferro also rushed six times for 11 yards and a touchdown. His rushing touchdown came on a nine-yard run on a fourth-and-two play for Samford’s final score of the game. This marks the second time Taliaferro has been named Freshman of the Week, as he won the award on Oct. 6.
Hooper punted six times for an average of 48.0 yards per kick. His longest punt of the day was a career-long 79-yard kick. Hooper also made three-of-four extra-point attempts.
Hooper was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season. He also received the honor on Oct. 6.
Samford will play its final home game of the season Saturday afternoon against ninth-ranked Wofford. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
