County wants part of economic stimulus

Shelby County leaders want part of President-elect Barack Obama’s proposed economic-stimulus package.
County Engineer Randy Cole said the Association of County Commissions of Alabama has asked local governments to come up with a list of possible projects that can be started within 90 days.
The key is that all projects should be planned now – allowing construction to start soon and get people back to work.
“It’s not a stimulus if it takes two years to get ready to build,” said Cole. “They’re asking governments to look at plans in hand, things we can start quickly.”
Shelby County’s list includes $2 million for bridge repairs and $5 million for road resurfacing.
The county commission is lobbying Gov. Bob Riley for a slice of any money awarded to Alabama. The Alabama League of Muncipalities is also encouraging cities and towns to seek federal dollars.
“The money goes to the state and will trickle down from there,” Cole said.
